Nature & Countryside

When visiting Flevoland for the first time, be surprised by the variety of the countryside, in which extensive fields with authentic farms alternate with large wooded areas with surprising clearings and scenic areas with birds and other animals. The Northeast Polder and the eastern and southern parts of Flevoland each have their own distinctive character. The Northeast Polder in particular is characterised by a clear division of areas separated by planting. This division is not seen in the eastern part of Flevoland; here, the polder landscape has greater variety. The southern part of Flevoland is divided into large areas, each with its own particular function: environmental development in the northwest, wooded areas in the southeast and an agricultural domain in the centre. Zeewolde is located at the outskirts of southern Flevoland between three different countryside types: coast, wooded areas and agrarian areas. This is also the location of the largest connected deciduous forest in Western Europe: the Horsterwold. Thousands of years ago, this was a primaeval forest that was flooded by the sea, hence the name of Zeewolde.
